All eyes will be on Rafael Nadal at the 2024 French Open. It’s a familiar sight and feeling, but there’s a twist this time: it could be Nadal’s final appearance. Nadal is the most dominant player in the history of the French Open, winning it 14 times, but a string of injuries in recent years have suggested the end of his playing career is near.
Known as the King of Clay, Nadal boasts an incredible record of 112-3 at Roland Garros, most recently winning in 2022. From 2005 to 2014, he won nine of 10 French Open appearances, and from 2017 to 2022, he has won five of six. Last year, Nadal withdrew before the tournament due to injury and is unseeded for this year’s Grand Slam.
Nadal’s biggest rival is defending champion and No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic. Nadal last beat Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2022, but even getting that far will be tough. Unseeded, Nadal will face No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev in the first round. It will be the first time since 2005 that Nadal has been unseeded at a Grand Slam.
Djokovic is the top seed in the men’s division and the defending champion, but he’s off to a shaky start in 2024. The 37-year-old Serb has won 24 Grand Slam titles but hasn’t reached a final this year. No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner is fresh off his Australian Open win, beating Djokovic in the semifinals, and No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz is riding high on his Wimbledon victory in 2023.
If both Nadal and Djokovic make it that far, they will meet in the semifinals. The top American men’s singles players include No. 12 Taylor Fritz, No. 14 Tommy Paul, and No. 15 Ben Shelton, but no American has reached the quarterfinals of the French Open since 2003.
