Young woman fights back against alleged carjackers who pistol-whipped her in Michigan parking lot: ‘Something in me snapped’

A young woman decided to fight back against a would-be car burglar who pistol-whipped her and cornered her in flip-flops, leading to her arrest.

According to Michigan State Police, the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of a Target store on Pardee Road in Taylor.

Rachel Smigulski told WXYZ-TV She was sitting in her boyfriend’s car when attempted car robbers appeared at her window wearing surgical masks and threatened her with a gun.

“I was just confused and very scared,” the 24-year-old said.

She said she tried to call 911, but one of the thugs slammed her phone away and hit her in the face with a gun. She said she felt blood gushing from her face as the man put a gun to her head.

“I’m sick of it. I won’t let anyone do that to me again.”

She complied with their request and handed over her car keys, but said that at that moment she felt something possessed her and decided to fight back.

“Suddenly, something snapped inside me and I was like, ‘You know what? No, this is not going to happen to me. This is not going to happen,'” she said.

Smigulski said he began screaming for help and banging his hands on the roof of the car. People in the parking lot began calling police. The attackers still had her keys but fled from the scene she had caused.

So she ran after them.

“I chased them. We ran all over the parking lot and I was wearing flip-flops. Then I lost my shoe, so my foot got cut open.” she said.

“I was ready to fight all three of them.”

Smigulski said he realized they weren’t that big physically and prepared to fight them.

“All three were ready to fight because they looked like skinny teenagers,” she said.

One of the assailants threw her keys as he fled. Police said the suspects ran into BJ’s restaurant, where employees called police and advised them that the suspects were hiding in the bathroom of their home.

Police announced the arrest of three juveniles between the ages of 14 and 18. A 9mm Glock was also recovered.the police said they believed Two boys and a man were playing basketball, missed the bus to Detroit, and decided to carjack someone.

Asked what motivated him to fight back, Smigulski said he was tired of people taking advantage of him.

“For years and years and years, people have attacked me and taken advantage of me,” she said. “It’s just disgusting. I won’t let anyone do that again.”

Smigulski says on Facebook that he is a Subway sandwich artist.

“I fought and won, so I’m very happy to be alive and not get shot by a car and die,” she said. I have written In the post.
