San Francisco Mayor London Breed is facing criticism over $1.7 million worth of toilets that were announced more than 15 months ago but have yet to be installed in the city.

“The restroom project fell apart the moment taxpayers realized the city was planning an event to celebrate $1.7 million in state funds that local politicians had secured for just a 150-square-foot building.” The New York Times reported. “That’s enough money to buy a single-family home in San Francisco with multiple bathrooms.”

After the story was first published in 2022, California Governor Gavin Newsom threatened to defund the toilet project, residents called the fiasco “Toiletgate,” and comedians and It is said that there were many jokes.

“There’s no way a small bathroom costs $1.7 million,” Newsom spokeswoman Erin Mellon told Fox News Digital at the time. “The state will withhold the funds until the city of San Francisco submits a plan to use this public money more efficiently. If we can’t, we will go back to the Legislature to rescind this spending.”

Fifteen months after the story broke, San Francisco residents complained about the lack of restrooms.

“Why don’t we have bathrooms here? I don’t understand it. Nobody understands it,” San Francisco resident Ted Weinstein told the Times. “This is another example of a city that can’t do that.”

Jeff Cretin, a spokesman for Democratic Mayor London Breed, said the city should consider changing the law to make construction projects more efficient.

“It’s worth changing the laws that are in place around construction projects like toilets that slow things down,” Cretan said.

The New York Times reported that discussions over the restroom plan “appear to have broken down last year,” according to a Dec. 22 letter to Buckley from the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks.

“Your team has been unresponsive to our repeated attempts to engage,” the Recreation and Parks Department wrote. “We are receiving inquiries from the public, journalists and local councilors about the status of this very high-profile project. We need to answer the questions.”

San Francisco City Supervisor Raphael Mandelman said he is working to loosen regulations involving “56 commissions and 74 oversight bodies” that make it difficult to complete public restrooms in the city.

“It’s going to take a lot of people focusing on that as a top priority to figure out all the things that need to be figured out to make government work,” Mandelman told the Times. “It’s easy to put it aside as we run from crisis to crisis.”
