Lottery Mystery in Quincy, Illinois
A gas station in Quincy, Illinois, is buzzing with curiosity after a significant Powerball ticket worth $1.04 billion was sold there on Wednesday night. The identity of the winner remains a mystery, sparking intrigue in this small town.
John Marshall, the 47-year-old manager of the Hy-Vee Gas Fresh & Fast convenience store, compared the situation to a “murder mystery,” noting that the news hit him as a surprise when a fellow gas station manager called him around 3 a.m. to inform him of the winning ticket.
“I thought, ‘Wow,’” he recalled. The call came as a shock, especially since Marshall himself had just purchased a ticket from the same store and, of course, was not the winner.
Residents are reportedly coming in, eager to ask if the winner has been identified. To date, there’s been no announcement, creating a buzz that has drawn many locals to the store. Marshall said that people seem hopeful, trying to catch some of the winning spirit by buying tickets from the same machines.
Quincy, with its roots on the Mississippi River, is a quaint city of around 39,000 residents. Marshall described his clientele as mostly regulars, saying the town has a friendly, old-school vibe where people are always willing to help one another.
In addition to the excitement surrounding the ticket, Marshall’s store stands to benefit financially, as they will receive a $500,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. The jackpot, having broken records, is now noted as the second-largest lottery prize ever in Illinois.
The winning numbers were 4, 26, 66, 67, 69, and the Powerball was 9. The challenge of winning such a prize is daunting, with odds of about 1 in 292.2 million for cracking the jackpot.
Winners have the option to take the enormous amount as an annuity over 29 years or a one-time cash payout of approximately $450.5 million—but it’s crucial to make that choice promptly, as they have 60 days from the drawing to claim the cash option.
Interestingly, Marshall noted that customers have been showing up with a sense of excitement, eager to see if the ticket sold truly held the winnings. “There’s been a great buzz going on, and I’m enjoying the ride as much as I can,” he said.
Despite the hopeful atmosphere, the identity of the winner remains a well-kept secret, and there’s speculation that they may choose to remain anonymous. The Illinois Lottery allows winners of substantial amounts to keep their details confidential, so it’s possible we may never learn who struck it rich.
Marshall expressed a wish that the future winner, whoever they may be, considers giving back to the community. “I hope they do well for the community,” he remarked. “I hope they start an organization in town.”
