1 Dead, At Least 24 Injured In Ohio Shooting

A shooting in Akron, Ohio, left one person dead and at least 24 injured.

Akron police are currently investigating a shooting that reportedly left a 27-year-old man dead and at least 24 others injured.

Authorities said the shooting happened just after midnight near Kelly and 8th streets.Number Avenue.

Police said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting several people had been shot in the area, and a short time later, gunshot victims began showing up at area hospitals.

Officers found a gun and multiple shell casings at the scene, but were unable to find a suspect.

Police said a street party was taking place nearby.

An eyewitness at the scene said: News 5 Hundreds of people had gathered at the party before the shots rang out.

“Everyone was wearing white T-shirts, there were women dancing on top of cars. It looked like a scene from a spring break movie. Everyone seemed to be having fun. On the way home it was a completely different scene,” an eyewitness said.

The Cleveland Clinic reported seeing seven patients early Sunday morning, including one in critical condition.

The hospital was placed on strict lockdown from just after midnight until around 3:30 a.m.

Thirteen of the 15 patients at Sama Health are in non-life-threatening condition, some of whom have already been released from the hospital, while one remains in critical condition.

On Sunday, Akron Mayor Shamas Malik (D-Ohio) and Akron Police Chief Brian Harding issued a joint statement following the incident.

“This morning, our city is reeling from the tragedy of senseless violence. With more than 20 victims now dead, pain and trauma are reverberating across Akron as we search for answers. As with every act of violence that occurs in our city, our hearts are with the victims and their loved ones,” they said. “We will bring those responsible to justice, but to do so we need the cooperation of our community. Anyone with information about this horrific shooting is asked to speak up to prevent further violence and retaliation. This can be done anonymously.”

“We will share more information about this horrific incident today and in the coming days. Our city government and the Akron Police Department continue to prioritize public safety as we strive to eliminate gun violence in our community,” the statement continued.
