According to some polls, one in three Democrats believe that Donald Trump faked the assassination attempt on him. When I read that, I thought, “Is this really true?” But this weekend, on my drive back to West Virginia from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, I heard this theory firsthand. And it was a very interesting story.
Located just off I-80 in Liberty, Ohio, Station Square Ristorante is a true gem. Ottavio and Bridget Musumeci have managed to create a truly fine dining restaurant attached to a Super 8 motel. And we’re not kidding! We were sitting at the wood-paneled bar ordering oysters and appetizers for a late lunch when we met Mark. He’s originally from northern New Jersey, and his accent made that immediately obvious. Mark shared some fascinating stories with us.

As usual, I steered the conversation towards politics, and we got onto the assassination.
“It was all a setup,” Mark told me.
Station Square Ristorante in Liberty, Ohio, serves up delicious Italian food, regardless of how you feel about Donald Trump.
Before I could reply, the bartender, John (who I later discovered hates both Trump and Biden), said, “No, they’re both dead, so that’s impossible.”
Mark’s response was, “He’s Donald Trump. He can do anything.”
So I did a little research: How could the perpetrator have convinced the boy to do this? Mark had a quick answer: Maybe the perpetrator paid the family money, or told them they’d only get a few years in prison, he said.

“And what about the death of Corey Comperatore?” I asked, referring to the former fire chief who died trying to protect his family from an assassin’s bullet.
“Donald Trump doesn’t care if his supporters die,” Mark retorted confidently.
You should know that Mark didn’t come across as a crazy person. Maybe a little into conspiracy theories, but he’s definitely not crazy. So how could he believe all this without any evidence?
He had a big appetite, devouring a Caesar salad and veal picante topped with mussels, and made it clear that it all came down to a simple principle: Trump can do anything.
I couldn’t help but think that the fact that Mark shares these kinds of bizarre, irrational ideas with a third of his party’s supporters is because that’s exactly what the Democrats and their media allies have been feeding them.
Mark wonders, if he watches liberal media regularly, why wouldn’t he think that Trump is capable of killing innocent people? After all, they’re saying that Trump will deny women their rights, not let black people vote, destroy democracy, etc. Mark has been conditioned to believe that Trump is a special kind of evil and that he can get away with anything he says.

I told Mark that if he thought a political party, or a side, or whatever you want to call it, was going to kill innocent Americans in this way, maybe it was time to buy a gun. Then he said something that surprised me.
“It’s not an issue with the other side, it’s just a Trump issue.”
It didn’t make sense, but strangely, I was glad to hear him say it. At least Mark doesn’t blame his fellow Trump supporters. At least not yet. Mark finished his talk before me and we shared a warm farewell. After the door closed, I asked John, “What do you think?” “It’s weird,” he shrugged.
Yes, it is, but here we are.
