On Android, here’s how to clear location data for a single photo:

Disable Bluetooth when not needed

Bluetooth works similarly to Wi-Fi and cellular networks, but performs simpler tasks over shorter distances. Bluetooth does not require a cellular signal or network connection and uses no data. Also, like any connection, it is not 100% secure.

To hijack your phone using Bluetooth, a hacker or scammer must be near you. But in public, you’re at arm’s length from strangers.

My advice: Turn off Bluetooth when you’re not using it. Keeping it active makes your device easier to find. As a bonus, keeping Bluetooth off will extend your device’s battery life.

  • The same steps work for Android smartphones as well.go to setting > connected device > Connection settings > bluetooth and switch it off. (Note: Steps vary depending on your phone model. If these steps don’t match your phone, look for or search for Bluetooth.)

Airplane mode also disables things like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so it works in an emergency, but you won’t be able to receive calls or text messages.

Replace your pen with something safer

I find it a bit strange that check fraud has increased so much. Criminals go to mailboxes and target envelopes that look like mailed checks or bill payments.

Check laundering is the most common type of check fraud. Here, scammers steal checks from the mail and change the recipient’s name so they can cash them. The amount is also subject to change.

If you need to write a check, use a security pen, also known as a check washing pen. Uni-ball 207 Series Pens (about $10 for 4 on Amazon) The specially formulated ink becomes trapped in the paper, making it difficult for criminals to wash or erase the check’s ink.

For added safety, please take your check directly to your local post office instead of using the mailbox. If email scams are on the rise in your area, take smarter steps here.

Remember that criminals prefer offline too

Thieves still use old tactics that we seem to have forgotten. We’re too smart for that, right?

  • Keep your handbag and wallet nearby when in public. Please bring only the cards you will use.
  • Be aware of who is around when you take out your phone, and cover the screen when entering your PIN.
