The contest for control of Congress is heating up, and with just over a month to go, both Republicans and Democrats are eager to see who will hold the reins for the last two years of President Trump’s term.
In the latest Fox News Power Rankings, House Democrats are ahead, with projections indicating they could secure 215 seats in the House, while Republicans might win 201. However, there are still 19 seats listed as toss-ups, which keeps the final majority wide open.
Interestingly, a flicker of hope for the Republicans has emerged from within the Democratic Party itself, which is experiencing a shift towards the far-left. The victories of some socialist candidates could propel the party further left than the general public seems to favor. Many GOP candidates are voicing this concern as they campaign across the country.
Key House Districts for Republican Gains
Below are ten House districts currently held by Democrats where Republicans could make significant inroads to claim victory.
Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District
Rep. Shomari Figures, a Democrat, is running for re-election in a district that has been redrawn to greatly favor the Republican side.
A Supreme Court ruling in 2023 led Alabama to create a second Black opportunity district before the 2024 elections, aiming to give Black voters more influence. Figures won his seat in a district previously occupied by Republican Barry Moore, who chose to run elsewhere after the redistricting.
However, a recent ruling in Louisiana v. Callais has notably restricted the application of the Voting Rights Act regarding the drawing of congressional maps, potentially allowing for adjustments that could diminish minority representation.
The impact on Figures has been substantial, as his district is now projected to lean Republican by about 14% in 2024, according to analysts.
Florida’s 9th Congressional District
In Florida, the state’s redistricting has also aimed to give Republicans a slight advantage. Rep. Darren Soto is up for re-election in a newly drawn district that voted for Trump by nearly 18%.
The Fox News Power Rankings categorize this district as “lean Republican,” while the Cook Political Report tags it as a “likely” Republican pickup.
Florida’s 14th Congressional District
Rep. Kathy Castor’s seat in the Tampa area has also been redesigned to make it more competitive for Republican challengers. Castor, a moderate Democrat, has been in Congress since 2007 and now faces off against Republican Mike Beltran.
The new map favors areas that would have supported Trump by about 10.5% in 2024, creating a dynamic where the race is still too close to call.
Florida’s 22nd Congressional District
In another instance of redistricting, Florida’s 22nd District could have led to an intense primary battle between incumbents Rep. Jared Moskowitz and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, but both decided to run in different districts. The seat, currently held by retiring Rep. Lois Frankel, is now viewed as a competitive opportunity for both parties.
Florida’s 25th Congressional District
Rep. Moskowitz, in another redistricted seat, now faces a landscape that once favored Democrats but has shifted in favor of Republicans after redistricting efforts in Florida. The newly drawn seat would have supported Trump by nearly 10 points in 2024.
Despite the unfavorable shift, Moskowitz is hopeful about his bipartisan track record, leading some analysts to anticipate a closer contest.
Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District
With Rep. Cleo Fields’ retirement, his seat in Louisiana opens up under conditions similar to those affecting Alabama. The redistricting there has diluted the Black voter base, making it more challenging for Democrats, and projections suggest it may fall to Republican candidates.
Maine’s 2nd Congressional District
Moderate Rep. Jared Golden’s retirement presents another chance for the GOP in a typically Democratic region. The district went for Trump by 9% in 2024, and Republicans are banking on strong candidates to seize the opportunity.
North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District
Rep. Don Davis faces a tough campaign this year in a newly reconfigured district that has become more favorable to Republicans. Having previously won by a narrow margin, the new dynamics could pose significant challenges for him in the upcoming election.
Texas’ 35th Congressional District
In Texas, Republicans have aggressively restructured the district maps to gain seats in anticipation of the midterms. This includes a district once held by Rep. Greg Casar, who is now pursuing a seat in another district, leaving the 35th open for both parties to vie for control.
Ohio’s 9th Congressional District
Rep. Marcy Kaptur, a long-serving Democrat, now faces a steeper path following her state’s redistricting, which has made her district more competitive for Republicans. Despite the challenges, Kaptur has a rich history of navigating tough electoral waters.
Overall, these dynamics illustrate how the race for Congress is not just about party lines but also about geography, voter base shifts, and strategic campaigning. It will be interesting to watch how these races unfold as the elections approach.
