11 Best and Worst Dressed from the 2025 Golden Globes

It's officially awards season, and you know what that means. Here's my roundup of the best and worst red carpet ensembles. I see (judge), so you don't have to look.

There were dozens of beautiful looks and dozens of fashion faux pas on last night's red carpet, but we've distilled them down to the top of the top and the bottom of the bottom.

1. Best: Zendaya at Louis Vuitton

this It's about what we do with the past. Wearing custom Louis Vuitton, Zendaya was the star of the glamorous ballroom at this year's Golden Globe Awards. This ginger Marilyn Monroe number reminds us of the great William Travilla white satin dress worn by Marilyn Monroe. Please call me madam First performed in 1953.

Travilla's dress was a near replica of the famous fuchsia dress she designed for Monroe for her 1953 performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend.” Gentlemen prefer blonde hair.

Here, Zendaya takes all the best parts of past costume designs and transports us into the future with unusual shades of orange and auburn hair. Of course, the Bvlgari necklace and ring set isn't bad either.

2. Worst: Ariana Grande in Hubert de Givenchy

This is how we don't repeat the past.

Ariana Grande's affinity for Audrey Hepburn and close friendship with Hubert de Givenchy, who helped build one of Paris' most innovative fashion houses that remains today, is understandable. This 1966 Haute Couture dress by Givenchy is a fashion classic worthy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. art.

Even so, it doesn't work at all for Grande.

This is not about the dress, it's about the person wearing the dress. Just like on the “Wicked” press tour, there's something off about Grande's look. The hair is washed out, there are almost no eyebrows, the makeup is useless, and the bust of the dress is too large for her tiny little body.

With a few major adjustments, this could have been one of the best looks of the night. But as it stands, not even a Swarovski crystal choker can save it.

3. Best Award: Nicole Kidman (Balenciaga Haute Couture)

Nicole Kidman plays a modern-day Aphrodite in an incredibly draped and glittering Balenciaga haute couture gown fit for a goddess.

When it comes to red carpets, I'm not sure it gets any better. This is bold in every sense of the word. Brat came out. Contains Baby Girl.

4. Worst: Schiaparelli's Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts in this Schiaparelli dress is one of those looks where the further you look down, the more you start to question the stylist's judgment.

Schiaparelli will no doubt post a 15-minute documentary-style clip on Instagram showing how the gown was designed, sewn and made. problem? No amount of craftsmanship can save a couturier's work from producing a dress that looks like a giant coffee filter stapled to the hem.

5. Grand Prize: Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton

A friend of mine texted me after seeing Emma Stone on the red carpet wearing this custom Louis Vuitton dress and quipped:[you] It must be salty…” I’m not going to lie, I am. It's really tough to put Hollywood's most overrated millennial actress on a best-dressed list, but give credit where credit is due.

I was recently researching how red tones are the most appealing color palette on the color wheel. Unfortunately, the brutalist light that has dominated everyday American aesthetics for far too long has erased red.

In that sense, Stone's gown may have been ripped from Jackie Kennedy's state dinner wardrobe, but like Queen Anne's box of cordial cherries, it's a welcome return to warmth. .

6. Worst: Christian Siriano's Melissa McCarthy

What's going on here with the drag branch?

7. Grand Prize: Andrew Garfield in Gucci

XXX

Best dressed of the night was Andrew Garfield in a custom Gucci suit. The double-breasted jacket's wide peak lapels made up for the lack of a tie or cummerbund. It was all the drama you need on a night like the Globes.

And like Emma Stone, who wore cherry red, Garfield's shirts, suits, and shades brought a much-needed rich forest green hue to the carpet. The resurgence of green is another sign that our culture has become too consumed with grays, whites, and cool neutrals.

8. Worst: Jodie Foster in Dior

When I see dresses like this Dior number worn by Jodie Foster, I think, “What's the point?” If it's all too bland and lifeless, why not opt for a tailored suit? Slacks and a silk blouse?

It's a huge missed opportunity for Foster. We need more leading women.

9. Grand Prize: Margaret Qualley in Chanel

It's no surprise that Margaret Qualley wore Chanel that night. She literally gets paid to wear the best, one-of-a-kind pieces from the pinnacle of Parisian fashion.

This gown in particular resonated with me because it could easily become a costume for a new movie. gladiator It's a movie, but it teeters on the edge. It's dignified, simple, and timeless. Isn't that what we all want to see on the red carpet?

10. Worst: Cate Blanchett in Louis Vuitton

I could be wrong, but I think this is the first time in the eight years I've been writing this column that Cate Blanchett has made it onto my worst-dressed list. Let me explain.

Blanchett, like Tilda Swinton, is prone to glances. She likes gowns with tight shoulders and voluminous bodies and draped skirts, like Haider Ackermann.

This Louis Vuitton dress tells us everything we've come to know about Blanchett's taste for no-good designers. But in a way, I found too much Cate Blanchett. This opinion felt even more valid when I learned that it was the gown she wore just last year at the Cannes Film Festival.

It would not be a bad behavior to change something that surprises us.

11. Grand Prize: Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior (written by John Galliano)

Fashion watchers are in for a treat as Anya Taylor-Joy wears an archival Christian Dior slip dress from the heyday of John Galliano's reign. Just imagine Shalom Harlow strutting down the runway in this dress.

Taylor-Joy's Tiffany Blue Book necklace features over 64 carats of crystal opals, and she probably can't move anywhere unless there are guards surrounding her, and these crowns It was probably protecting the jewels.

This look is largely Absolutely perfect. My little problem is that I pose too much. Like the necklace, the clothing itself speaks for itself. The one who poses as if he's spinning a plate in a microwave is… well, he's a theater brat.
