Stabbing Incident at Michigan Walmart
On Saturday afternoon, eleven people were taken into custody after a stabbing incident at a Walmart in Michigan. The alleged assailant, 42-year-old Bradford James Gill, is facing charges related to terrorism and random attacks.
According to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Gill entered the Walmart in Traverse City around 4:10 PM. About 35 minutes later, both a customer and an employee were attacked in the checkout area. Law enforcement responded swiftly, arriving within three minutes of the 911 call, as a group of bystanders managed to detain Gill in the parking lot.
“I can’t praise everyone involved enough. The individual was taken into custody within a minute after the call,” noted Sheriff Michaelsey. “That’s remarkable, considering how many potential victims could have been harmed.”
As for Gill’s motives, they remain unclear. Previous offenses related to controlled substances have been noted, according to authorities. The victims included both men and women, with ages ranging from 29 to 84. Out of these, seven were reported in fair condition while four were in serious condition, according to Munson Healthcare, which also mentioned signs of recovery among patients within hours post-incident.
“Encouraging signs of recovery have been observed among the patients,” the hospital shared in their update.
Prosecutor Noel Morgenberg explained that pursuing terrorism charges reflects the intent to instill fear within the community, not just to harm individuals directly.
“This isn’t just about specific victims; it’s about creating a sense of fear throughout the entire community, changing how we go about our daily lives,” Morgenberg stated.
A former US Marine, Matt Kolakovsky, was at Walmart during the attack. He recounted the moment he heard an employee shout, “He has a knife!” and felt compelled to protect his daughter and others.
“I thought, ‘What can I do? I don’t have a weapon,’ so I just grabbed an empty grocery cart and tried to push him away,” Kolakovsky said.
As the chaos unfolded, Kolakovsky witnessed the suspect stab a man and an elderly woman while fleeing the store. Despite the turmoil, Kolakovsky and other bystanders managed to pursue the suspect outside.
“He was yelling something about being a soldier and claiming everyone at Walmart was a bad guy,” Kolakovsky added.
Another individual, Derrick Perry, intervened by brandishing a firearm and ordering the suspect to drop his weapon.
“I had just come by the store to help someone, but then the situation escalated. I ended up assisting with the arrest until police arrived,” Perry explained.
Kolakovsky described the scene as chaotic, with ambulances arriving, sirens blaring, and people being loaded into vehicles for medical assistance.
“It was a lot of panic. There was blood everywhere, and the atmosphere was just overwhelming,” he recalled.
