Tragic School Shooting in Austria
On June 10, 2025, a devastating school shooting in Graz, Austria, claimed the lives of eleven individuals, including the shooter, a 21-year-old former student. According to officials, the assailant used two weapons during the incident at BORG Dreierschützengasse high school before ultimately taking his own life inside a restroom.
Despite stricter gun control measures in Austria compared to countries like the United States, this incident has prompted discussions surrounding gun laws. Some American conservatives suggest that this tragedy illustrates how severe restrictions on firearms don’t necessarily prevent violence, but rather infringe on individuals’ Second Amendment rights, a stance that seems to spark considerable debate.
“Today is a dark day in the history of our country,” remarked Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker during a press conference.
Mayor Elke Kahr labeled the incident a “terrible tragedy,” announcing a period of national mourning lasting three days, with flags at official buildings to be flown at half-staff. A moment of silence will also be observed on Wednesday morning for the victims.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner disclosed that among the deceased, six were females and three were males—making nine victims in total, plus the shooter. Additionally, twelve others sustained injuries, some of whom remain in critical condition. Unfortunately, the death toll increased to eleven when one injured victim succumbed to their wounds in the hospital.
“A woman has died from her injuries in a hospital,” reported the AFP news agency.
In the wake of the tragedy, residents of Graz have been coming together, responding to appeals from the Austrian Red Cross for blood donations. The organization set up a donation center in a local hotel, and the football club Sturm Graz also opened its training center for those wishing to donate.
“All we can do is try to make a small contribution,” stated Thomas Tebbich, the club’s managing director. “That’s why SK Sturm invites you to donate blood at the Messendorf training center. Come and donate blood; it saves lives.”
European Union spokesperson Paula Pinho expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the city of Graz. She emphasized the need for solidarity in mourning and understanding in the aftermath of this horrific school shooting.
