A tragic incident has emerged from Colorado, where an 11-year-old boy is accused of killing his younger brother while they were napping after school.

The victim, identified as 5-year-old Elias Reliford, was discovered dead at their home in the suburban area of Centennial on March 10th.

Authorities have charged the older brother with first-degree murder in relation to the event, which reportedly unfolded after the boys returned home from school, as family members explained.

Dawn Miles, the boys’ great-aunt, stated that Elias was asleep when the shocking incident took place, while his brother was asked to complete some chores.

“That’s when it all happened, while he was sleeping,” Miles recounted.

Specific details regarding how Elias was killed have not been disclosed due to the minors involved. The family has also chosen not to discuss the situation as they cope with the emotional aftermath.

Calling the murder “the most horrifying act a human being can commit against another human being, especially a child,” Miles expressed disbelief at the nature of the tragedy.

“We never imagined that someone like our brother would hurt Elias,” she shared on behalf of the parents, who are understandably shocked.

Miles illuminated the bond between the brothers, describing them as inseparable, often seen together playing or riding around the neighborhood.

“He was very social. He just loved being outside. It was his hobby,” she mentioned, adding that Elias had a fondness for fire trucks and practical jokes.

“If you see one brother, you see the other,” she emphasized.

In the wake of this devastating loss, Reliford’s family is now vacating their home and is currently moving between hotels in search of something more stable.

According to reports, the eldest sibling, aged 12, is residing with another family in Louisiana.

“My family’s situation is not good,” Miles admitted. “There’s anger, there’s questions… There are two losses here, you know, two brothers.”

The 11-year-old is being held at the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center, as noted by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

In a somber reflection, Miles expressed her wish for Elias to be remembered as a joyful kindergartener who loved riding his scooter in the neighborhood.

“I want to see him smiling and riding his scooter,” she said. “He was a happy kindergartener. He was a happy kid.”
