Recovery of 12-Year-Old Shooting Victim at Minneapolis Church
A 12-year-old student from Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis is reportedly showing remarkable signs of recovery after being shot last month during a church service. Her family has shared optimistic news about her condition.
On August 27th, a tragic incident occurred when a 23-year-old assailant, who identified as a transgender woman, opened fire on children attending Mass. This devastating attack resulted in two fatalities and left 21 others injured. Among the injured was Sophia Forchas, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
Despite the severity of her injury, doctors are hopeful about her recovery. Reports indicate that Sophia may soon transition from acute care to an inpatient rehabilitation program, which shows significant improvement on her part. Although a bullet remains lodged in her brain and has caused damage to a vital blood vessel, her family is encouraged by the progress she is making.
“We’re thrilled to share that Sophia continues to make steady progress, showing promising signs of neurological recovery,” her family stated through Hennepin Healthcare. “Her doctors remain cautiously optimistic, and her exceptional medical team is preparing for her transition this week from acute care to rehabilitation. Though she has a long journey ahead filled with extensive therapy, her resilience inspires hope at every step.”
Initially, Sophia’s neurosurgeon expressed doubts about her survival. Dr. Walt Galicich remarked on September 5th that the pressure in her brain was extremely high. He noted, “If you had told me ten days later we’d be standing here with any ray of hope, I would have said it would take a miracle.”
Her family conveyed deep gratitude for her survival and recovery, crediting divine intervention. They stated, “Sophia surviving this horrific attack is a miracle… Her healing progress is nothing short of miraculous, an undeniable testament to the mercy and intervention of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
A previous update indicated that Sophia was taken off the ventilator and is now able to breathe on her own.
A GoFundMe campaign has been created for the Forchas family, raising over 92% of its $1.25 million goal by the time of this report. The funds are intended for Sophia’s ongoing medical care and trauma counseling for her brother, who witnessed the shooting but was physically unharmed. Their mother, a Pediatric Critical Care Nurse, arrived at the scene unaware that her children were involved.
“Adding to the heartbreak, her younger brother was also inside the school during the shooting. Though he was unharmed, the trauma of witnessing such a terrifying event — and knowing his sister was critically injured — is something no child should ever experience…” the GoFundMe description reads.
The community continues to pray for Sophia’s recovery as her journey unfolds.
