Tragic Discovery in Louisiana
Residents of Louisiana are grappling with fear after the body of a missing 12-year-old was found. The boy, Bryan Vasquez, was reportedly killed by alligators, and troubling allegations concerning his mother complicate the situation.
The search for Bryan lasted 12 days, culminating in the discovery of his remains by volunteers from the United Cajun Navy, aided by a heat-detecting drone. He had gone missing from his home in the Mikudo area of New Orleans.
During a press conference, volunteer John Gasanders recounted witnessing “violent movements beneath the surface” that led to the grim discovery in a lagoon. He mentioned that two alligators, one approximately 11 feet long and another around 6 feet, were near the boy’s body until they were startled off by the drone.
The coroner’s report indicated that Bryan suffered blunt force trauma and injuries consistent with an alligator attack. Gasanders expressed regret, stating, “We did everything we could to protect his body and honor him.” Bryan had been missing since August 14 after he slipped out of a window, and neighbors’ security footage showed him wandering in diapers.
Authorities executed a search warrant in connection to the incident, seizing the mother’s cell phone as part of the investigation. On Thursday, reports emerged detailing the mother’s troublesome past, particularly a conviction related to child abuse. In 2013, when Bryan was just three months old, he had to be rushed to the hospital after allegedly vomiting blood and stopping breathing. His mother claimed he was screaming as if in pain, but doctors later confirmed signs of abuse, including a fractured skull and other serious injuries.
Despite being sentenced to five years for the abuse, she eventually regained custody. She characterized Bryan as autistic and nonverbal, and a 2021 report categorized his condition as a “traumatic brain injury (non-accidental).”
Family representatives have responded, condemning domestic violence due to the mother’s past conviction. They emphasized that she had done her best to protect her children. One community advocate stated, “If the state believes she is dangerous, that means they have failed again.”
In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help Bryan’s family.
