ICE Arrests over 120 Illegal Immigrants in Houston
In a single day operation, more than 120 undocumented individuals were apprehended across the Houston metropolitan area. This initiative, conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), wrapped up just before midnight on October 29, targeting those often driving without licenses or insurance.
Videos circulating on social media showed ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers making arrests in various locations, including parking lots and during vehicle stops near local businesses. The statement accompanying the footage read, “On Oct. 29, we arrested over 120 people in Houston to remove dangerous, often uninsured, and illegal aliens from our roads.” It was a significant operation, indeed.
As reported by local media, ERO officers and federal agents have been ramping up efforts day and night, leading to numerous arrests of illegal immigrants around businesses and roadways in Houston. A recent nighttime sweep a few days prior saw a team of 40 agents, alongside Bob Price, apprehend roughly 25 undocumented immigrants, many of whom had prior criminal histories.
While navigating through parts of Houston known for high crime rates, agents utilized a new data-driven targeting system, suggesting a well-organized approach to their operations. Notably, ICE maintains a presence in Texas all year round. Even adverse weather, like heavy rain, didn’t deter agents from their mission.
The upswing in operations has understandably caused anxiety within Houston’s undocumented community. According to the Migration Policy Institute, around 500,000 illegal immigrants are estimated to live in the greater Houston area as of 2019. In a raid on October 27, ICE arrested Marlon Odile Gomez Hernandez. This 29-year-old from El Salvador, suspected of being affiliated with the MS-13 gang, had quite a troublesome encounter with law enforcement; he got stuck on a sign while trying to escape.
During a targeted enforcement effort, Gomez-Hernandez fled from agents into a nearby laundromat. After climbing to the roof, he ended up in a precarious situation on a sign before ICE officers rescued him. Following this incident, he was taken to the Montgomery Processing Center in Conroe, Texas, where he awaits a deportation hearing. It’s noteworthy that he had a history of legal trouble back home, having been arrested on aggravated extortion charges in January 2022 along with other gang members.
This series of events highlights a growing enforcement strategy and its impact on both the immigrant community and law enforcement approaches in Texas.
