13 Killed in Train Accident in Mexico Linked to Alleged Contract Manipulation by Former President's Family

Mexico is currently facing significant political challenges following a devastating train crash in the southern part of the country. The incident resulted in 13 fatalities and approximately 100 injuries. This particular train was part of a flagship project promoted by the ruling party and was operated by the navy, aiming to enhance tourism and living standards in the region. However, the initiative has been marred by accusations of corruption, manipulation of contracts, and the use of inferior materials.

The derailment occurred on a Sunday morning on the Z Line, which is a transoceanic route in the somewhat isolated state of Oaxaca. According to the Mexican Navy’s statement issued hours later, around 250 individuals were aboard, including both passengers and crew. Among them, 13 lost their lives, and 98 suffered various injuries. In response to this tragedy, federal authorities in Mexico have opened an investigation to ascertain the cause of the derailment.

This accident has sparked considerable debate and controversy across Mexico. The railway project was one of the signature initiatives of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (often referred to as AMLO), who had directed the military to oversee its construction. Current President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly backed the project as well as the decisions made under López Obrador’s administration.

From its beginnings, AMLO’s rail initiative has been surrounded by claims of corruption and a lack of transparency, with attempts by policymakers to restrict information regarding the project under national security provisions.

Political adversaries have highlighted that López Obrador’s son, Andy López Beltrán, along with his close associates, were suppliers for the project, allegedly opting for low-quality materials to increase their profits. Recently, Andy stirred more controversy when he was spotted leaving an upscale store in Houston, which seems at odds with his father’s narrative of advocating for poverty and struggling origins.

The current ruling party, MORENA, which emerged under AMLO’s influence, professes to champion equality for Mexico’s impoverished and supports socialist principles. Yet, the lifestyle of the party’s leaders often contradicts this image, as they are commonly seen enjoying luxurious living conditions.
