Young Boy’s Bravery Saves His Family During Ocean Rescue
A 13-year-old boy exhibited remarkable courage by swimming for hours in rough waters to save his family off the coast of Australia, according to police reports. This effort resulted in the successful rescue of his mother and two younger siblings.
Austin Appelby recounted his decision to remove his life jacket for better mobility and embarked on a 2.5-mile swim, which took him about four hours. He faced enormous waves before finally reaching shore, prompting a rescue operation that ultimately saved his mother, Joann Appelby, 47, his brother Beau, 12, and sister Grace, 8.
“The waves were massive, and I didn’t have a life jacket. I kept telling myself, ‘Just keep swimming,’ and somehow, I finally made it,” Austin shared.
On Friday, while vacationing from Perth, the family used a rented kayak and paddleboard near Quindalup, Western Australia. Strong winds and turbulent seas soon swept them away from the shore. Austin initially tried to paddle back in an inflatable kayak but had to abandon that as it began to take on water.
A search helicopter later located Joann and her children, all wearing life vests and holding onto their paddleboards, around 8:30 p.m. Reports indicated that they had drifted approximately 14 kilometers from shore and spent nearly 10 hours in the water.
Police Inspector James Bradley praised Austin’s bravery, stating, “His determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and brother.”
Joann Appelby described her choice to send Austin for help as one of the toughest decisions she has ever had to make.
“Telling Austin, ‘Go ashore and get help,’ was incredibly hard,” she mentioned to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The family had tried to stay upbeat during the ordeal, singing and joking to keep spirits high. But as night fell, anxiety grew with the realization that help had not yet arrived.
“We tried to keep it light, treating it like a game until the sun began to set. That’s when things got really intense,” she recounted.
By the time they were rescued, all three children were cold, and Beau had even lost feeling in his legs, according to Joann.
“I just wanted to make sure my babies were okay,” she said, relieved that they were all safe.
Remarkably, all four family members were checked medically but did not require hospitalization.
