Tragic Shooting in Newburgh
A 13-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following the shooting death of an 11-year-old inside a home in New York. This unfortunate event took place on Thursday morning.
Police in Newburgh, situated about 90 miles north of New York City, responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on North Miller Street around 8 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered the young boy had died from gunshot wounds, as stated in a press release issued by the Newburgh Police Department on Friday.
Local authorities, including the Detective Division and the Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force, quickly launched an investigation into what had occurred.
Within 12 hours, police had identified and located the three juvenile suspects involved. The firearm used in the incident was also recovered. It was reported that the victim was shot in the head while a group of children were playing with guns.
The boy charged is not related to the victim. The victim was a student in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, leading School Superintendent Dr. J. Manning Campbell to express the community’s deep sorrow over the tragedy.
“The loss of one young life and the arrest of another is an unimaginable tragedy,” Campbell said in a statement. “Two children full of potential have suffered a devastating loss in so many ways. Our hearts break for their families, friends, teachers, and everyone affected by this tragedy.”
In the wake of this heartbreaking event, support services and counseling have been made available to both students and staff. Campbell urged the community, “Please don’t hesitate to reach out. No one should have to go through this pain alone.” He emphasized the importance of caring for one another in these troubling times.
As of now, the Newburgh Police Department and the Newburgh Enlarged City School District have not provided additional comments regarding the incident.
