U.S. Forces Target Drug Traffickers in the Eastern Pacific

U.S. military operations led to the death of 14 individuals believed to be involved in narco-terrorism during a series of strikes against four ships thought to be engaged in drug smuggling in the Eastern Pacific, as announced by Army Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday.

Hegseth emphasized that all the airstrikes occurred in international waters, with no U.S. personnel harmed. He further noted that these actions were ordered by President Donald Trump, aiming at specific terrorist organizations linked to drug trafficking in the region.

According to Hegseth, intelligence indicated that the ships were known to authorities and were navigating established drug routes laden with narcotics. The first attack targeted a vessel carrying eight male suspects, while the subsequent strikes resulted in four and three additional narco-terrorists killed, respectively. One individual reportedly survived.

Regarding the survivor, Hegseth mentioned that the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) activated standard search and rescue protocols. Mexican authorities have taken charge of coordinating the rescue process.

If you think about it, this approach reflects a broader strategy; the Department of Defense has been engaged in international anti-drug efforts for over two decades. Now, Hegseth remarked, the focus is shifting back to defending the homeland. He made a striking comparison, suggesting that narco-terrorists have caused more American fatalities than al-Qaeda, indicating a similar response would be warranted for them. There’s an intention to track, network with, and eliminate these threats.

Since the Trump administration started targeting suspected drug-laden boats on September 2, reports suggest a significant rise in the number of suspected traffickers killed, particularly in the Caribbean. Hegseth pointed out that a lethal strike was carried out against a vessel linked to the Tren de Aragua, another designated terrorist group involved in drug trafficking.

On a practical level, these operations seem to underline the administration’s commitment to addressing drug-related violence and threat in the region. The U.S. is clearly engaging in a multi-layered strategy, focusing both on action and collaboration with neighboring authorities to tackle this pressing issue.
