Flu-Related Death of Alabama Teen in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A 14-year-old boy from Alabama, Noah “Smo” Smothers, sadly passed away from flu-related complications at a Chattanooga hospital on Monday. Smothers was a freshman at Ider High School.

The school took to social media to share the heartbreaking news of his passing. Their message read: “It is with deepest regrets that we share about the passing of one of our beloved students. Noah ‘Smo’ Smothers was an Ider Hornet through and through, exemplifying strength of character and a bright young mind. He was a friend to many and will be missed dearly by all who knew him at our little school. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers as they endure this difficult time.”

New Home Baptist Church in Pisgah also honored Smothers, noting his involvement in the church community.

Smothers died at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger due to complications from influenza. The church shared their condolences as well, saying, “We extend our deepest condolences to the Smothers family in the passing of their son. Noah ‘Smo’ Smothers, the 14-year-old son of Mark and Charlene Smothers, passed away early this morning from complications related to influenza. Noah was an active member of NHBC youth and was such a kind young man! While our hearts are breaking, we can rest assured knowing that Noah is in the arms of Jesus.”

Noah’s sister expressed her grief through a Facebook post, sharing, “Our hearts are broken. Our best friend, brother, my first baby. There are not words to describe the hurt we are feeling right now. But we have the peace of knowing that he is with our Lord and savior. It was such an honor to be his sister. He loved big and always had jokes to tell. Hold your loved ones extra close and let them know how much you love them.”

An obituary mentions that Smothers was part of the basketball team and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
