Notting Hill Carnival Sees Increased Arrests

The London Metropolitan Police reported the arrest of 140 individuals during the first day of the Multicultural Notting Hill Carnival on Sunday. Charges include assaulting officers, drug-related offenses, robbery, sexual crimes, and possession of weapons.

Following an increase in police presence due to last year’s two murders, arrests surged by approximately 40% compared to the 104 made on the same day in 2024.

This carnival, a vibrant street celebration, focuses on the Afro-Caribbean heritage of London’s Windrush generation, who migrated to the UK after World War II. It started in 1966 and has grown to be one of the largest events, attracting close to a million people every year. However, it faces rising scrutiny and calls for prohibition due to incidents of anti-social behavior and violence.

According to the police, 15 individuals were arrested on Sunday for assaulting a police officer. In addition, 21 people were taken into custody for possessing offensive weapons; 25 for cannabis; six for class A drugs; two for other drugs; 19 for supplying drugs; two for robbery; four for public order offenses; and four for sexual crimes.

Interestingly, the police noted that 105 arrests took place during the carnival itself, with 35 aimed at individuals attempting to enter the event.

This year, the Metropolitan Police implemented live facial recognition technology to identify and apprehend those on a Crime Watchlist through real-time CCTV footage linked to a police database. The spike in arrests over the previous year occurred even after police had preemptively detained over 100 individuals considered likely to cause disturbances before the festivities began.

Law enforcement also imprisoned 21 attendees and issued bail or probation orders to another 266 to curtail potential disruptions at the event.

This renewed focus on safety comes after two fatalities at last year’s carnival, including the tragic death of Cher Maximen, who was stabbed while her three-year-old daughter looked on. Maximen’s family suggested before the event that it might be wiser to relocate the festivities to a park, where attendees could better avoid potential dangers on the streets.

In January, 20-year-old Shakeil Thibou received a lengthy prison sentence of at least 29 years for his role in Maximen’s murder. His brothers, Sheldon and Shaeime, faced charges for assaulting an officer who was trying to break up a fight involving Maximen.
