Stabbing and Chemical Attack at Yokohama Rubber Factory
A 38-year-old man was arrested on Friday after a violent incident at a Yokohama Rubber Company tire factory located in Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The man reportedly stabbed eight individuals and also injured seven others by spraying a liquid thought to be bleach.
The suspect has been identified as Masaki Koyama, an unemployed individual. He is facing charges of attempted murder.
Emergency responders quickly transported all victims to local hospitals. Officials reported that five of the stabbing victims are currently in critical condition.
There are indications that Koyama may have had some connection to the factory, but his exact intentions remain uncertain. Eyewitnesses noted that he arrived wearing what resembled a gas mask and was armed with a survival knife.
The Yokohama Rubber Company focuses primarily on tire manufacturing for trucks and businesses. It operates multiple factories around the globe, including 59 in Japan, 40 in Europe, and 23 in North America, employing over 34,000 people altogether.
Japan has seen a rise in mass knife attacks in recent years. Some notable incidents include the 2016 stabbings in Sagamihara, which claimed 19 lives, and the 2019 attack in Kawasaki that resulted in 2 deaths and 18 injuries.
This situation is still developing, and further updates may be forthcoming.
