Update on Seattle Shooting Incident
On Sunday evening, new information emerged regarding the Seattle shooting that resulted in three fatalities. The individual initially taken into custody is just 15 years old, and authorities have since indicated that there are two additional suspects involved. One of the deceased was known to the teenager apprehended, while the other suspect remains unidentified.
According to documents submitted to the Seattle Juvenile Court, investigators suspect that the 15-year-old and one of the people who died exchanged gunfire with at least one other unknown individual.
Mayor Katie Wilson stated in a press briefing that the young suspect is currently being held in juvenile detention, facing charges related to firearms offenses and first-degree assault. He is expected to appear in court on Monday afternoon.
Law enforcement officials announced early Monday that they are continuing to search for other potential suspects, but they cannot yet confirm if any of them are among the deceased.
Seattle Police Chief Shon Burns commented, “We’re trying to determine who that person is.”
Initially, investigators believed that the two suspects were firing at each other, but by late Sunday, they clarified that it wasn’t yet clear whether any of the victims were part of the altercation.
The three individuals who lost their lives in the incident include two men, aged 19 and 44, and a 56-year-old woman. Among the four injured is a 2-year-old boy, who is reported to be in stable condition as of Monday. The other injured victims—a 23-year-old, a 27-year-old man, and a 39-year-old woman—have since been discharged from the hospital.
The shooting transpired around 6 p.m. near Seattle Center, a bustling tourist destination that features the Space Needle and a sports arena housing the Seattle Kraken and Seattle Storm. The area was crowded with attendees of the annual Bite of Seattle food festival when the incident occurred.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with one person mentioning hearing loud bangs followed by screams. “I heard bang, bang, bang. Then yelling. Just straight-up screaming,” said an eyewitness.
Another witness, Adia Sengupta, recounted being evacuated to the Seattle Armory, noting how quickly the area filled with people seeking safety, mentioning that dozens rushed to the venue.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reported that several agents were on-site, while the local police are leading the investigation. Additionally, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson confirmed that the state SWAT team was deployed at the request of Seattle police.
In remembrance of the victims, a candlelight vigil has been scheduled for Monday night at the International Fountain located at the Seattle Center.
