15-year-old cheerleader killed, 3 others hurt in shooting after Georgia prom

A 15-year-old cheerleader was killed and three others were injured in a shooting at a high school after-prom party in south Georgia, police said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that a 17-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with a shooting that occurred in Fitzgerald early Saturday morning. Fitzgerald is approximately 130 miles south of Macon.

Chiel Park was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Irwin County High School Principal Jared Luke told WALB-TV she was a freshman.

“He’s just numb. He can’t even think,” said Chelsea King, Chiel’s mother. “She was in her 15th year and had her full life ahead of her.”

A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with felony murder in a shooting that left one high school cheerleader dead and three others injured in Fitzgerald, Georgia.

Channen Brown, 17, was arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and charged with felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Under Georgia criminal law, 17-year-olds are charged as adults. A court clerk said Monday there was no record of Brown ever appearing before a judge or having an attorney represent him.

Police told WALB-TV on Monday that additional arrests are possible.

Ben Hill County schools are on lockdown after a second shooting in Fitzgerald on Monday. Initial reports indicate two people were charged with injuries. Schools in Ben Hill County and neighboring Irwin County both said they are offering counseling to students.

“Chiel’s death is extremely sad and tragic,” Luke said in a statement. “She had a loving spirit and she was always smiling.”

The other two people who were shot, a 19-year-old woman and a 15-year-old man, have been released from the hospital. A 14-year-old student who was shot in the arm was undergoing surgery on Monday.
