A Kentucky man who won $167 million in the Powerball was arrested once again after being found intoxicated and asleep in a sports car. This marks his fifth arrest since he won the jackpot, according to various reports.
James Farthing was taken into custody after a caller reported a white Ford Mustang obstructing an intersection around 3 a.m. on Sunday in Georgetown. As per Lex18, the caller noted that the vehicle later parked in a Walmart lot.
When deputies arrived at the store’s parking lot, they discovered Farthing asleep inside the running Mustang. They had to knock on the window multiple times to wake him up, as mentioned in the arrest citation obtained by the publication.
The jackpot winner from a rural area in Kentucky exhibited several signs of intoxication. He reportedly smelled of both alcohol and marijuana, had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred his speech, and had trouble balancing, according to the arresting officer.
Farthing allegedly claimed that a woman had dropped him off at the parking lot; however, surveillance footage revealed that no one had exited the car after it parked.
He was charged with public intoxication and taken to the Scott County Detention Center.
This incident adds to the growing list of legal troubles for Farthing since winning the state’s largest Powerball prize last year. In late July, he was charged with domestic violence for allegedly strangling a woman in his home after a boating trip.
Moreover, he recently faced charges in a hit-and-run incident that occurred last November when he reportedly crashed his Corvette into another vehicle in Lexington and fled on foot.
Additionally, Farthing was arrested in February for allegedly intimidating a legal process participant. He also faces charges for battery on a law enforcement officer, stemming from an incident in April 2025, soon after his lottery win.
He won the hefty jackpot by purchasing a $2 Powerball ticket at Clark’s Pump N Shop in Georgetown and decided to share his winnings with his mother, Linda Grizzle.
Farthing is due to be arraigned on public intoxication charges on Tuesday.
