Late on Saturday night, a tragic car accident claimed the life of 17-year-old Deontavis Cooper, a promising college football prospect from Florida.
The single-vehicle crash occurred in Leon County, leaving two 18-year-olds in critical condition as well.
Cooper was an offensive lineman at Thomas County Central High School in Georgia and had plans to enroll at Tulane University.
He had achieved a significant milestone in high school sports, winning two state titles with Thomas County Central.
The accident unfolded just before 11 PM when the sedan he was in veered off the road, struck a culvert, became airborne, and eventually collided with a power pole.
The car flipped over, and Cooper was ejected from the back seat.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Head Football Coach Justin Rogers expressed his sorrow in a Facebook post, recalling Cooper as someone who could “brighten up a room with a smile” and who was “loved by many.”
“There are no words for the heartbreak we are feeling today,” Rogers wrote. “Big Coop was one of those rare young individuals whose smile could light up a room and make those around him feel valued. He loved people and treated others with kindness.”
Looking ahead, Rogers mentioned how excited they were to see Cooper start at Tulane, pursuing his college football dreams, which—sadly—ended too soon. The impact he made on his teammates, coaches, and friends will always be remembered.
“Big Coop was loved by many, and he also loved people. We were all better because we knew him.”
Before signing with Tulane in December, Cooper had offers from several schools, including South Alabama, Cincinnati, UCF, Arkansas State, and East Carolina.
Tulane football also released a statement mourning Cooper’s loss, praising him as a person of dedication, resilience, and positivity.
“His love for the game and unwavering work ethic were evident in everything he did, and he was on a path to make a significant impact both on the field and in the community,” the statement read. “Deontavis was admired not only for his athletic ability but also for his kindness and honest spirit. His bright personality and warm heart touched many, but his absence has left a deep void in our hearts.”
“As we honor Deontavis, let us remember his extraordinary spirit, kindness, and the joy he brought to those around him. He will forever be a valued member of the Tulane community.”
