California has the strictest gun laws in the U.S. These include red flag laws, a ban on “assault weapons,” a ban on “large capacity” magazines, universal background checks, gun registration requirements, a 10-day waiting period for gun purchases, limits on the number of guns law-abiding citizens can purchase each month, a ban on authorized concealed carry for self-defense on college campuses, a ban on K-12 teachers and staff being armed for classroom defense, the designation of numerous public sensitive locations where authorized concealed carry for self-defense is prohibited, and ammunition restrictions.
Despite all these restrictions, California ranked first in “active shooter incidents” in 2021 and 2023.
