NYPD Arrests Suspect in Playground Shooting of Teen

The New York City Police Department has arrested 18-year-old Zahir Davis after a focused manhunt for the individual responsible for the shooting death of 15-year-old Jayden Pierre at a Queens playground earlier this month. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the arrest on Saturday via social media.

Davis faces murder charges linked to the incident that took place on April 16. Authorities reported that he fled to Jamaica following the shooting but returned to New York on Friday, which led to his immediate apprehension by detectives from the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Pierre was shot around 6:15 p.m. near Merrick and Baisley streets in Queens. The day after the shooting, the NYPD circulated a photo of a suspect wanted in connection with the crime.

Social media clips captured the shooting’s chaotic moments, showing Davis striking Pierre multiple times before firing shots. The surrounding crowd quickly scattered as the gunfire erupted.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was particularly vocal about the situation, criticizing current Mayor Zoran Mamdani for his lack of immediate response. In a post, Adams expressed disbelief that such a tragic event involving a child didn’t make front-page news, stating, “All children should be protected.” He further questioned Mamdani’s absence in addressing the incident directly.

Mamdani later held a private meeting with community leaders and openly discussed the shooting at an unrelated press conference around Earth Day. He described the incident as heartbreaking for not only Pierre’s family but for the entire community. Mamdani underscored the city government’s responsibility in addressing such violence, expressing confidence in the NYPD’s capacity to maintain accountability.

Mamdani did not attend Pierre’s wake scheduled for Monday but mentioned plans to meet with the family. Efforts to obtain comments from the NYPD and Mamdani’s office were not successful immediately.
