18-year-old experiences a heartbreaking accident on a carnival ride during a festival in Cabo San Lucas.

A tragic incident unfolded during a celebratory evening in Baja California Sur this week. An 18-year-old woman, Gabriela Rodríguez Tezoco, fell from a ride known as El Péndulo at the Cabo San Lucas Traditional Fiestas while it was still in motion. This unexpected accident prompted a criminal investigation and resulted in the dismissal of the city’s civil protection chief, as reported by local media.

Witnesses nearby observed as she was ejected from her seat on the ride. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene to provide first aid, and she was transported to a hospital. Sadly, she passed away shortly after reaching the facility, according to various local accounts.

The Los Cabos city council expressed their condolences, stating, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the young woman, who was injured in the incident at the mechanical attractions area of the Cabo San Lucas Traditional Festivals, tragically lost her life despite the efforts of medical personnel.”

This heartbreaking accident has led to significant administrative consequences. Local authorities have removed the head of the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection and Risk Management. An interim director has been appointed to facilitate access to departmental files, safety protocols, and operational permits for investigators.

The Baja California Sur State Attorney General’s Office is now conducting a formal investigation to assess accountability. Forensic engineers are set to analyze the amusement ride to ensure it conformed to safety regulations. As of midweek, no operators of the ride had been identified or arrested.

In response to the incident, Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez ordered the immediate suspension of El Péndulo and mandated a comprehensive safety inspection of all other rides at the fairground. Addressing the community at a festival concert later that day, he urged residents to support the grieving family and extended his commitment to municipal assistance.

Rodríguez Tezoco was preparing to graduate high school in 2026, according to reports. The entire situation has left many in the community shaken, as expressed by the mayor: “Today, with the same spirit with which we come together to celebrate, we must come together to support Gabriela’s family. It could have been any one of us. You are not alone.”
