Bike Festival Incident in Atlantic Beach

A gang-related incident unfolded during a bicycle festival in Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, on Sunday, resulting in several injuries.

The event, taking place at the Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bicycle Festival, saw chaos erupt around 1 a.m. Officials reported that many attendees were present, and at one point, a person at the scene suddenly ran off. Nineteen individuals were assessed for injuries, none of which appeared life-threatening.

According to Horry County Fire and Rescue, three injured individuals were taken to the hospital, while others seemed to have made their own way to local medical facilities.

Footage from a nearby balcony captured moments of attendees happily enjoying the festival before they all began to flee in unison.

In light of the number of injuries, fire officials designated the situation as a mass casualty incident to help manage the response effectively.

Interim Town Manager Titus Leakes stated that there were no known struggles, weapons, or imminent threats to safety. It seems the panic was sparked by one person running, which led to a brief stampede that lasted only moments.

Additional video footage showed the aftermath of the event, revealing an empty stage and debris scattered across the ground.

The festival is an annual part of Atlantic Beach Bike Week, held in North Myrtle Beach, where attendees enjoy live music and festivities.

Atlantic Beach officials expressed their heartfelt concern for those affected, emphasizing their commitment to addressing the circumstances that led to the injuries and wishing a swift recovery to those impacted.

As emergency services were already on-site, they assisted the injured, and eventually, the festival continued.

A witness remarked on how swiftly things were controlled, indicating that the atmosphere had been enjoyable overall. They felt that the incident, while concerning, was isolated and would not overshadow the festival’s success. This person mentioned having attended for years without any issues and expressed anticipation for returning next year.
