Virginia Sheriffs Back Jason Miyares in Attorney General Race

A group of 19 sheriffs from Virginia has publicly expressed support for incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares after Democrats selected former Attorney General Jay Jones to run against him this November. Following the primary, the sheriffs stated in a letter, “The choice is clear. The decision is ours.”

They praised Miyares for his dedication to law enforcement and first responders, calling on other sheriffs in Virginia to rally behind him for reelection. Meanwhile, Jones is focusing his campaign on opposing the policies of former President Trump’s administration.

The letter from the sheriffs emphasizes their concerns about Jones’ policy positions, describing them as detrimental to the law enforcement community. They accused him of advocating for measures that would weaken law enforcement, including replacing prosecutors with social workers and risking public safety.

Throughout the letter, the sheriffs highlighted the advancements made by law enforcement in Virginia over the last four years, warning that Jones could lead to a resurgence of “lawlessness, violence, and illegal drug activity.”

“We urge our fellow law enforcement members to support Attorney General Jason Miyares and remind our communities of the significant differences made in the last four years,” they wrote, criticizing Jones’ proposals as harmful to Virginians.

They specifically pointed out policies that could hinder law enforcement investigations and reduce accountability, such as eliminating cash bail and supporting reduced sentences for drug offenses involving minors.

The letter was signed by several notable sheriffs, including Kyle M. Moore and William Kidd Jr., among others.

As Virginia gears up for statewide elections this year, the outcomes are seen as a potential indicator for the competitive races expected in 2026. On the campaign trail, Jones has critiqued Miyares for not participating in efforts aimed at safeguarding Virginia from divisive policies, insisting that the state needs leadership focused on prioritizing its residents.

Jones did not provide a comment when requested by media outlets.
