19-year-old Connor Lotterman killed in deliberate shooting at Michigan house gathering

Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Michigan University Student

A student at a Michigan university was fatally shot during what police describe as a “deliberate” shooting incident at a house party. Connor Rotterman, just 19 years old, was struck in the head by a bullet fired by a suspect believed to be in his twenties at around 11:11 p.m. on May 9, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Colonel Jake Sparks from the sheriff’s office emphasized the intentional nature of the shooting, stating, “Several rounds were fired. This wasn’t a one-off accidental shot.” The tragic outcome resulted from what appears to be reckless behavior, although he noted that the deaths were, indeed, accidental.

The incident unfolded when the 20-year-old suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, fired multiple shots from his bedroom upstairs, leading to one bullet tragically striking Rotterman. The engineering student at Grand Valley State University was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries on May 10.

Dr. Stephen Kore from the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office has classified the cause of death as a coincidence. Reports indicate that alcohol may have played a role in the evening’s events, further complicating an already tragic situation.

All individuals involved were acquaintances, underlining a close-knit setting that took a devastating turn. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working with the county prosecutor’s office to assess potential criminal charges against the suspect.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office or Silent Observer.

In the wake of this tragedy, Rotterman’s family has expressed their sorrow. His sister, Mariel, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, reflecting on their bond and the impact he had during his brief time on earth. “Thank you for being the best little brother one could ask for,” she wrote. “I am so grateful for the 20 years we had together.”

Aaron Hait, Dean of Students at GVSU, expressed the university’s sadness over Rotterman’s passing. In a statement, he extended condolences to his family and noted that the university will offer support services to students and staff during this difficult time.
