Police say a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted just steps away from Gracie Mansion and left bloody and screaming.
The shocking attack happened around 1:20 a.m. Saturday near East 90th Street and East End Avenue, about a block from the mayor’s residence.
Police said an alert doorman heard the woman’s cries for help and rushed to the scene, surprising the attacker who was hiding behind her, knocking her to the ground before attacking her.
“This young woman was on the floor crying desperately, with blood on her shirt and nose,” he recalled.
The gunman fled westbound on East 90th Street. The victim was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Cornell Medical Center in stable condition, police said. No arrests have been made.
The heroic doorman, who did not want to be named, told The Post he “heard someone screaming” and grabbed a flashlight and headed down the block to investigate.
He then spotted the suspect running towards York Street.
“Hey, what are you doing?” the doorman yelled.
The pervert continued running. The good Samaritan then turned his attention to the victim of the assault.
The doorman, who stayed with the victim until police arrived, said he has a 20-year-old daughter and “it was my fatherly instinct that kicked in. I just wanted to help.”
The doorman, who doesn’t normally work the night shift, said his wife told him, “It really was God putting me in the perfect place to help others.”
Hours after the attack, another nearby doorman said he had warned residents to “be careful”, especially at night.
“It gets so lonely around here at night,” one person said, adding, “She [the victim] it’s okay.”
Police said the suspect was about 6 feet tall and wearing a gray sweatshirt with white stripes and dark jeans. The NYPD did not say whether the victim was a passerby or a local resident.
