1975's Matty Healy promises to step away from politics despite mixed messages during performance

Matty Healy’s Message at Glastonbury Festival

During the Glastonbury Festival on Friday night, Matty Healy, the frontman of the British rock band The 1975, shared with fans that they’ve chosen to move away from incorporating political themes into their live shows. However, this assertion seemed somewhat contradicted by the quick appearance of politically charged visuals during the performance.

Healy addressed the crowd after their first song, acknowledging that some might feel let down by the absence of political content, but emphasized the band’s direction. “I want people to know this is a conscious choice,” he remarked, explaining that he hopes their legacy focuses more on love and friendship instead of politics. He mentioned, perhaps with a hint of frustration, that politics can be overwhelming in the world today, suggesting that more wasn’t necessarily needed during their concerts.

He noted, “There’s a lot of politics everywhere… and I don’t think we need more politics.” His comments were described as “really basic,” but he encouraged the audience to appreciate the “level of friendship” that he feels is important.

Following his speech, amidst the atmosphere, a song from the band transitioned into one with political imagery, including a montage that referenced some of their more politically charged work—like a depiction of Donald Trump and Kanye West, among other themes.

Healy has had his share of controversies, particularly when he made headlines in 2023 for a public display of affection with guitarist Ross McDonald on stage as a protest against Malaysia’s anti-LGBTQ laws. This incident not only led to the band’s cancellation from performing at a festival but also raised concerns about potential repercussions for LGBTQ individuals in Malaysia, as locals feared further government oppression.

A representative for the band emphasized Healy’s commitment to advocating for the LGBTQ+ community, defending their intent to support their fans and the broader community. In past remarks, Healy has expressed strong emotions regarding political situations, admitting he cried when Trump won the U.S. election in 2016, citing feelings of exhaustion and defeat.
