CDC Reports 19th Norovirus Outbreak on Cruise Ships This Year

The CDC has announced the 19th outbreak of norovirus related to cruise ships this year, highlighting a recent incident aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Sea Serenade. This particular outbreak has resulted in nearly 100 people falling ill as the ship traveled from San Diego to Miami.

Royal Caribbean informed the CDC about the outbreak, which occurred on September 28. Reports indicate that over 90 passengers and four crew members experienced symptoms during their voyage, although not all were sick simultaneously.

The primary symptoms associated with this outbreak included diarrhea and vomiting, as noted by the CDC.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean emphasized the company’s commitment to health and safety, stating, “The health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities we visit are our first priority.” They also mentioned implementing rigorous cleaning procedures that exceed public health guidelines.

Noroviruses, often referred to as “stomach bugs,” are notorious for spreading easily in confined places like long-term care facilities and cruise ships, according to medical experts. They can be transmitted through contaminated surfaces or the air, with close living quarters enhancing the risk as soon as an outbreak occurs.

The experts stated that a small amount of the virus can cause illness and can persist on surfaces for a significant time. Thus, individuals in shared environments must exercise caution.

Handwashing with soap and water is recommended over hand sanitizer to minimize the risk of infection. If someone is experiencing severe vomiting, it’s advised they stay away from public areas, as the virus can become airborne. Cleaning with approved disinfectants, such as bleach, is also crucial for eliminating the virus from frequently touched surfaces.
