Illinois Spending on Immigrant Support Projects to Hit $2.5 Billion

Illinois is projected to allocate approximately $2.5 billion to support immigrants, primarily focusing on healthcare. A recent report sheds light on these expenses.

The report, published by the Illinois Institute of Public Policy, a group that monitors state public policy, compiled various costs associated with assisting the influx of immigrants into the state. This data indicates that taxpayer money is being funneled into healthcare services, immigration welcoming centers, housing, emergency food, resettlement services, and rental assistance. Since 2023, Illinois has dedicated $478 million to so-called “immigration benefits.”

Moreover, the Illinois government has reportedly spent over $1.6 billion on two programs aimed at covering immigrant healthcare costs, according to a report from the auditor’s office.

One particular program, providing health benefits for immigrant adults aged 42 to 64, is set to face reductions due to “budget constraints,” with its ending planned for July 1st. Other programs aimed at seniors will continue as planned.

The audit revealed that actual costs have far exceeded initial forecasts. Originally, the estimated cost for the advanced program was $224 million, but the auditors discovered that expenses reached $412.3 million—an astonishing 84% over expectation.

In 2023, total expenditures went beyond anticipated spending by over $400 million. This amount alone could significantly support the entire homeless population in Illinois for a year, as indicated by various data points.

Governor J.B. Pritzker has been actively addressing these issues, previously testifying before an assembly regarding the state’s sanctuary policies. Amid these discussions, he noted the strain of a broken immigration system, expressing pride in how the state has responded by ensuring that families get the support they need during this humanitarian crisis. He highlighted busloads of immigrants arriving from Texas under Governor Greg Abbott’s directives.

Chicago officials have not immediately commented on the new findings. As for the state’s treatment of immigrants, it remains a controversial topic among residents, with many feeling strongly about it.
