Two undocumented immigrants were indicted Wednesday on charges they sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, according to court documents and a release.
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric J. Toney’s office announced that Elia Antonio and Juan Carlos Rocha Mejia face multiple charges in connection with the May 19 incident in which Antonio’s 12-year-old daughter was bound, blindfolded and assaulted before fleeing the scene, according to a release from the district attorney’s office Wednesday and the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office on May 20. According to the criminal complaint, Antonio was the mother of the 12-year-old girl. “[Elia Antonio] The criminal complaint against Antonio states that “on or about Saturday, May 18, 2024, in Oakfield, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, Antonio knowingly offered or attempted to transport a child for the purpose of commercial sex acts. ” According to the complaint, Antonio told the girl to “put on some nice clothes” before driving her to Mejia’s residence.
“Investigators say ELIA [Antonio] and Juan [Carlos Rocha Mejia] “They are both illegally present in the United States and have detention orders issued by ICE,” the complaint against Antonio states.
The 12-year-old girl broke free from Mejia’s attempts to stop her and ran into a home, where the resident called the sheriff’s office, police said. post The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page. According to court documents, Mejia was accused of assaulting the girl a second time in December but has not been charged.
“Victim 1 stated the incident occurred at her home on Cardinal Court in Fond du Lac County in December 2023,” the complaint against Mejia states. “Victim 1 stated that Elia was away helping Victim 1’s grandmother with a medical issue and Juan was babysitting at the time.”
“Victim 1 testified that she told Juan she had an upcoming field trip, but that the field trip would cost money. Victim 1 testified that Juan said he would pay for it, but asked, ‘What am I getting in return?'” the complaint continues. “Victim 1 testified that Juan then began to touch her thighs and move his hands up. Victim 1 testified that this made her feel very uncomfortable, so she left the room at that point. Victim 1 testified that she happened to be in her mother’s bedroom, in her mother’s bed.”
According to court documents, prosecutors charged Antonio with child trafficking, failure to protect a child and two misdemeanor counts of bail jumping, all of which carry a maximum sentence of 54 years in prison if convicted. Mejia was charged with first-degree child sexual assault, child abduction, false imprisonment and strangulation and suffocation, all of which carry a maximum sentence of 97 years in prison if convicted.
