2 teen girls killed after jet ski crashes into boat in Illinois

Two girls, ages 16 and 13, were killed Tuesday when the jet ski they were riding on crashed into a boat on an Illinois lake, authorities said.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a 16-year-old girl was operating a Yamaha jet ski with a 13-year-old boy as a passenger when the accident occurred on Lake Marie in Antioch around 5:15 p.m.

Witnesses told the sheriff’s office that the teens were traveling at a high rate of speed near the waterway leading to Grass Lake toward a Sea Ray cabin cruiser that was also approaching the waterway.

However, the two ships were unable to avoid colliding.

“It doesn’t appear they were trying to evade or make any sudden movements,” said Deputy Chris Covelli with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. FOX 32 Chicago. “Apparently they ran straight into a cabin cruiser. It appears to be a tragic and unfortunate accident.”

According to authorities, the two girls on the jet ski were wearing life jackets but lost consciousness and were thrown into the water. The four passengers on the Sea Ray quickly pulled the girls from the water and called 911 to help rescue them.
