Bridges was a certified Level II firefighter and EMT, having joined the Hickory Fire Station in June 2023 after graduating from the Gaston College Fire Academy the previous year.
“At just 20, Jake exhibited a strong passion for firefighting and a commitment to his community,” Hutchinson remarked.

The Hickory Fire Station first announced Bridges’ death without naming him. It was only on Friday that Hutchinson released a statement confirming his identity. Bridges leaves behind his mother, stepfather, grandparents, and girlfriend.
A procession for Bridges will take place on Monday afternoon, transporting him from Winston-Salem to Newton, North Carolina. According to his obituary, a celebration of life is scheduled for June 11.
“The Hickory Fire Department mourns this profound loss, standing in solidarity with Jake’s family, friends, and the community,” Hutchinson expressed. “We appreciate the support from the community and all partner agencies during this tough time.”
