A 20-year-old Virginia Tech student suddenly disappeared on Friday and was later reported missing.
Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office are searching for Johnny Roop, who was last seen at an apartment complex in Merrimack sometime Friday, according to the university.
School officials said Roop was scheduled to take an online exam at his parents’ home in Abingdon by 5 p.m. that day, but he never showed up.
He was scheduled to arrive by car, which would take about an hour and 40 minutes.
But officials said the last time the man’s cell phone rang was at 4:26 p.m. Friday near New River Valley Mall.
The college student has blonde hair and hazel eyes and is 6 feet 3 inches tall.
He was driving a black 2018 Toyota Camry with a Virginia license plate number “TXW6643” and a Virginia Tech sticker on the rear window.
childhood friend He told local NBC affiliate 10 News. When he heard that Roop had not been seen or heard from for days, he said, “I felt sick to my stomach.”
“John is not the kind of guy who just disappears,” Isaac Childress told the station. “Some friends I don’t hear from after a few days. That’s normal. They’re doing their own thing, but Johnny, he’s a man who values his family and friends.”
Roop’s mother said on Facebook that her son’s cell phone had not been working for at least two days and asked for help finding him, saying he “doesn’t look much like him.”
Ms Childress said the situation was “not stacked up”.
“So many things have been turned upside down,” he said. “If he was scheduled to leave Blacksburg for Abingdon at 10 a.m., why was he at a mall in Christiansburg with his cell phone about 20 minutes before the test?” It was then that friends said he had left. ”
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who found his car or has information about his disappearance to call investigators at 540-382-4343.
