200 Firefighters Battle Massive 5-Alarm Fire At Grocery Store

A large fire broke out at a Bronx grocery store on Thursday night. 200 firefighters were called in to fight the blaze.

The fire started around 5:30 pm when the C-Town supermarket was packed with shoppers.A vigilant employee noticed smoke coming from the top of the building near power lines, allowing customers and employees to rush to safety before the fire escalated into a five-alarm inferno. , NBC 4 New York report.

As the fire spread, 50 units of 200 firefighters and EMS personnel were called to the scene to fight to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby gas stations.Many residents had evacuated to the building next to the supermarket. Firefighters continued to extinguish the fire overnight and confirmed there were no “hot spots,” officials said, indicating a total loss to the store and the owner having to rebuild completely to save the business. According to News 12, authorities reported four minor injuries, including three firefighters and a civilian.

FDNY Fire Chief Laura Kavanagh told the outlet she was grateful that no lives were lost in the massive fire.

“It’s a massive fire and a lot of work for the members, but it’s what they do every day and they’ve done a phenomenal job.”

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Investigation is in progress.
