Major Incident Declared in Derby

A significant incident has prompted the evacuation of around 200 homes in Derby, a city in central England. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of using an explosive device.

According to Derbyshire Police, the evacuations were a precautionary step taken after authorities executed a warrant at an address on Vulcan Street based on “material information.” The police indicated that the evacuated area was established to ensure the safety of residents.

The two arrested individuals are men in their 40s and 50s, currently in police custody. However, no further details about their identities have been provided.

Local Reaction

A 17-year-old boy living nearby expressed his shock at the evacuation. He shared, “I was so shocked and didn’t know what to do. I literally jumped out of bed, got dressed, and then I just told everyone that they had to leave,” said Esteban Duda.

As part of the response, the British Army’s Explosives Division reportedly conducted a controlled explosion in the vicinity. Authorities cautioned residents that they might hear an explosion as part of these measures.

Derbyshire Police clarified that the incident is not currently being treated as a terrorism case and reassured the public that there is no ongoing risk to the surrounding area. Nonetheless, residents are advised to be ready to vacate their homes for up to 24 hours.

For those who are out of their homes or evacuated, the police encourage communicating via their Facebook page, as officers are conducting door-to-door checks. If social media access is unavailable, residents are directed to use the local non-emergency number for communication.
