2,000+ Migrants in New Government-Assisted Caravan Moving Through Mexico

More than 2,000 migrants are currently traveling through southern Mexico with the support of government officials and NGOs, with the goal of eventually reaching the U.S. border. The group, which calls itself “Way of the Cross Migrants,” is currently moving toward Mexico City. From there, the migrants will take buses and other transportation options to eventually reach the U.S.-Mexico border.

The caravan left the state of Chiapas on Mexico’s southern border on Monday. As they have done with several other caravans, the group at the front of the caravan carries a large white wooden cross intended to represent the hardships the migrants face on their journey.

Mexican police escorted the group along the roads and controlled traffic as they traveled.

In some cities where migrants are expected to camp overnight, officials from Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM) are working with NGOs to prepare.

The caravan’s goal, like previous caravans, is to reach the Texas border. Groups routinely disband upon arrival in Mexico City and continue their journey in passenger buses and other vehicles.
