As Bill Belichick's time with the Patriots comes to a close, more details are beginning to emerge about how things unraveled in his final years at the helm.
Belichick and the team mutually parted ways Thursday, ending a 24-year history that included six Super Bowl championships, nine AFC Championships, 17 AFC East titles and 296 regular-season and playoff wins.
However, since the beginning of 2019, that luster has begun to fade a little, and signs of things to come have begun to appear. According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Brier:.
At the time, the Patriots' scouting staff was particularly high on South Carolina's Deebo Samuel and Ole Miss' AJ Brown, but Belichick had doubts after the two visited together.
Because of their “cheerful” demeanors, Belichick didn't think they were taking the visit “seriously,” Bouyer wrote.
Belichick then began looking more closely at Arizona State's N'Keir Harry, but after an impressive visit in New England and recommendations from trusted confidants Todd Graham and Herm Edwards, he It started to look more attractive.
The Patriots ultimately selected Harry and left tackle Isaiah Wynn, but were unable to fill a key position for the team going forward.
Harry was traded to the Bears before the 2022 season, and Wynn signed with the rival Dolphins before the 2023 season.
Meanwhile, Brown and Samuel have combined for four Pro Bowl appearances.
What we know about the Patriots and Bill Belichick's split
The Patriots and Bill Belichick will reportedly part ways on Thursday after 24 years and six Super Bowl championships.
Rumors have been circulating all season about Belichick's future, as the Patriots finished 4-13 and missed the playoffs for the third time in four seasons. Belichick met with Patriots owner Robert Kraft over the past few days and subsequently reached a mutual decision.
Belichick has a career record of 266-121 with the Patriots, including 31 wins in the playoffs.
The 71-year-old has no plans to retire and needs just 15 more wins to match Don Shula's all-time regular season and playoff wins record by a head coach in NFL history.
According to ESPN, the Falcons are Belichick's most likely suitor after firing Arthur Smith at the end of the season.
Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo is considering Mike Vrabel, who was fired by the Titans, as the likely replacement for Belichick, and that's a possibility. Other players with past ties to the Patriots could also be considered, including Brian Flores and Josh McDaniel.
Breer said the episode made scouts within the organization feel as though their voices weren't being heard and that they were hearing information from outside the team about the efforts Belichick had put in over the months. It was said that it made him feel that this was not the case.
This partially shaped how the 2023 season played out and ultimately led to Patriots owner Robert Kraft deciding it was time to move the franchise in a different direction.
“For me, today is a day of gratitude and celebration,” Belichick said Thursday. “We had a vision to build a winning team here, to build a championship football team. It exceeds the amount of success we could have achieved together.”
