Hawaii’s Democratic governor said Wednesday that parties in a lawsuit over the 2023 wildfires are close to a settlement.

According to a report by the Associated Press on Wednesday, Greene said the compensation settlement would be worth just over $4 billion.
The media continued:
Green said he hopes to finalize the details in the coming days, possibly as early as Aug. 6, 2019. 1st Anniversary The fire killed 102 people and destroyed historic Lahaina.
“That would be great if that were to happen, and I humbly call on all parties to work on an agreement,” Green said in an interview in his office. “It looks like we’re pretty close to an agreement. There’s just a little bit of resistance left.”
An Associated Press article noted that more than 600 lawsuits have been filed over loss of life and damage caused by the wildfires.
Breitbart News reported on August 11, 2023 that the wildfires were caused by an invasive grassland species growing on an abandoned farm. The report further noted:
Wet winters allow grass to grow quickly, providing fuel for fires and playing a key role in Hawaii’s transformation from a place where wildfires are rare to one where, like mainland California, they are considered an increasingly common risk.
…
But as in California, where environmentalists and courts have blocked efforts to manage forests by removing potential fuels for wildfires, mismanagement of vegetation on former farmland has played a major role in recent devastating wildfires.
At the time, the article noted that the direct cause of the fire was unknown, but that strong winds from Hurricane Dora contributed to the spread of the fire.

Meanwhile, Green told The Associated Press that injecting $4 billion into Lahaina would help the area recover from the devastating damage it suffered.
“If we had made different decisions, we might not have had these losses,” Green said in a September interview about the wildfires with CBS News.
Breitbart News noted that he did not want to discuss whether officials were “asleep at the wheel” or whether Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen should resign.
