2023 Video: Buttigieg Boasts About Contributing to the Failure of the Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Merger

Transportation Department’s Involvement in JetBlue and Spirit Airlines Merger

A video from 2023 features former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg discussing the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) role in opposing the merger between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways.

In the clip shared from a CNN interview, Buttigieg remarked, “Traditionally, our department hasn’t engaged in these merger cases, but that’s changing now.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring consumers have options, access to lower fares, and competition in the airline industry, noting a decline in such competition over time. He mentioned that they’re taking unusual yet necessary measures, supporting the Department of Justice’s lawsuit, and initiating their investigation.

According to a Politico report, in March 2023, the DOT and the Department of Justice (DOJ) unveiled a joint effort to challenge JetBlue’s $3.8 billion planned acquisition of Spirit Airlines.

The DOJ and DOT initiated a coordinated effort against JetBlue’s $3.8 billion attempt to acquire the ultra-low-cost airline Spirit. This marks a determined effort to address the long-standing trend of consolidation within the airline sector and to promote more affordable fares for Americans.

As part of this, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit in federal court against the merger, claiming it would lead to higher prices and limit consumer choices in travel. Although JetBlue and Spirit argue that fewer seats would be available post-merger, they maintain that fares would remain low. Additionally, the attorneys general from Massachusetts, New York, and the District of Columbia have joined the lawsuit.

On Saturday, Lowell Kafiel from Breitbart News reported that following Spirit Airlines’ abrupt announcement of its closure, around 17,000 employees lost their jobs.

The airline stated on Saturday that an “orderly reduction” of its operations had commenced “immediately.”

In a statement, Spirit Airlines expressed, “With great regret, we have begun an orderly reduction of our operations, effective immediately.” They informed customers that all flights had been canceled and that customer service would be unavailable. They reflected on their 33-year impact on the industry through their ultra-low-price model, expressing a desire to continue serving customers for years to come.
