2025’s World Happiness Report drops: See where the U.S. ranks

The 2025 World Happiness Report was recently released this month. The US has revealed that it is not only behind other countries in North America, but also European countries and several countries.

The study is published annually by the Welfare Research Center at Oxford University, but usually ranks Scandinavian countries very well. The theme of this year's report is, according to the survey, “the impact of compassion and sharing on people's well-being.”

Several factors, including inequality, generosity, freedom, life expectancy, and perceptions of corruption, all contribute to the rankings, but one question related to happiness is heavily oppressed by researchers.

“Our global happiness rankings are based on a single question asking people to assess their quality of life on a 0-10 scale,” the site explains.

The United States has been ranked in research over the past few years, despite being ranked 11th happiest country in 2011. The study stated participants: “Are you satisfied or unhappy with the freedom to choose what you do in life?”

Despite the low rankings of happiness and freedom, the US boasts a high GDP of $76,276 per person, ranking fourth in GDP. The US also ranked 12th and 16th in social support and generosity, respectively.

“The increase in people eating alone is one of the reasons for reducing happiness in the United States,” the study said, adding that the decline in US happiness and social trust explains the greater part of the political polarization and the vote for the “system.”

Meanwhile, Finland has been ranked at the top of the world's happiness reports since 2018. The study concluded that it is considered a “universally available and high quality health, education and social support system” and that health inequality is low.

“Our annual happiness rankings are once again led by Nordic countries, and Finland is still the first and first,” the important insights of the study concluded. “The Nordic countries are also ranked at the top of the expected actual return of lost wallets.”
