The excitement is building as 16 teams aim for a chance to play in Omaha later this month.
This past weekend saw the initial roster of 64 teams trimmed down to 16, as the NCAA Baseball Tournament’s Super Regionals are set to begin shortly. These teams will battle it out this weekend for eight coveted spots in Omaha, and some players looking to improve their MLB draft stock will be performing in front of scouts.
Here’s what you need to know about the Super Regionals. If predictions are what you’re after, we’ve got those sorted too.
What is the format of the Super Regional?
One of the appealing aspects of the NCAA Baseball Tournament is its diverse formats each spring.
Last weekend’s regional tournament employed a double-elimination setup, with the 64 teams divided into 16 mini-tournaments of four teams each. Now, the remaining 16 teams are split into pairs of eight. Each pair will compete in a best-of-three series to determine which eight teams will move on to Omaha.
The hosting team will have home advantage for Games 1 and, if needed, Game 3. The visiting squad will be the home team for the second game.
Once in Omaha, the format shifts back to double-elimination. The eight teams will be divided into two four-team brackets, using this method to decide the final two teams, who will then face off in a best-of-three series to crown the champion.
