Group F 1st Set – 2026 FIFA World Cup
Group F is shaping up to be quite the spectacle, leading to an intriguing finals atmosphere.
In one match, the strong teams of Japan and the Netherlands ended in a 2-2 tie, demonstrating their skills and readiness for progressing in the tournament.
On the other hand, Sweden delivered a commanding performance, defeating Tunisia 5-1. With their upcoming fixture on Saturday, June 20th, Graham Potter’s team has a solid chance to advance to the round of 32, and possibly even claim the top spot in their group.
What’s the Current Ranking in Group F?
As we look ahead to Saturday’s Group F matches, here’s how the teams stand:
| Team | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | Points |

| Japan | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 1 |
| Netherlands | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 1 |
| Tunisia | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 5 | -4 | 1 |

The Current Scenario for Group F
Here’s what to consider for Group F as we head into the Saturday matches.
We begin with Sweden, who—as mentioned—are on the brink of qualifying for the Round of 32 this weekend.
A victory against the Netherlands will almost guarantee their advancement as one of the top two teams from Group F. If they win, they will have six points, and at a minimum, they’ll finish second in the group.
However, should they win and Japan ties or loses to Tunisia, Sweden can secure the top spot in their group. If that happens, they will compete against the second-placed team from Group C in the subsequent round. Sweden’s potential win would increase their points to six, while Japan would either stay at one point or move to two. Even if Japan manages to beat Sweden in their final group match, they still wouldn’t surpass Sweden’s points.
As for Tunisia, they are facing elimination this Saturday. They were effectively knocked out after their defeat by Japan and the Netherlands’ win over Sweden.
Japan and the Netherlands
Neither Japan nor the Netherlands is in a position to be eliminated in the second set, but they can’t qualify for the finals either. We will provide updates on their situations before the third set of matches in Group F.
Tiebreak Scenarios in Group F
Moving on to the tiebreak arrangements set for Group F starting Saturday, June 20th.
Here’s how tiebreaks will be assessed during this World Cup: If teams in the same group end up with tied points, a three-step method will be employed to resolve the tie.
The first step involves analyzing the maximum points from group matches between the tied teams. After that, the focus shifts to the highest goal difference among the tied teams in those matches, and lastly, the maximum points scored in all group matches among the tied teams.
If the tie continues after these steps, teams will move on to Step 2. This will first review the goal difference for all group matches, followed by the total number of goals, and finally, the highest team behavior score concerning yellow and red cards.
If a resolution is still pending, teams with equal points will be ranked according to their latest positions based on the FIFA World Ranking.
FIFA indicates that the first step is based on the “maximum points earned in the group matches between the teams in question,” which effectively serves as a head-to-head tiebreak if two teams are level.
As we approach the second set of matches, the only current tiebreaker is team behavior scores, which presently favor Japan, placing them ahead of the Netherlands. Make sure to check back here for potential updates before the third set of matches.
