What’s at Stake in Group L?
Before the matches kick off, here’s a glance at the possible scenarios for Group L.
England could secure a spot in the Round of 32 with a win against Ghana, which would also likely secure them the top position in the group—if Panama does not win against Croatia. Just a draw, though, won’t guarantee England’s advancement.
On the flip side, Ghana is also in a strong position. If they triumph over England, they too could find themselves moving forward to the next round, especially if Croatia fails to win against Panama.
Even a draw does not assure Ghana of a place in the next round, making their match all the more critical.
If Croatia loses to Panama while Ghana either draws or wins, they could be eliminated from contention altogether.
Likewise, Panama faces a similar fate; a loss against Croatia coupled with an England win could see them out of the tournament.
Tie-Break Scenarios in Group L
Now let’s consider how the tie-break system will work for Group L starting with Tuesday’s matches.
If teams finish on equal points after the group stage, a three-step tiebreaker process will come into play. It begins with the maximum points earned in the head-to-head matches between tied teams.
Should that not resolve things, the next steps involve comparing goal differentials and goals scored across all group matches. Finally, if needed, even team conduct scores will be factored in.
If there’s still a tie, then a Team FIFA Ranking will determine placement.
Using England as an example, if they win against Ghana, they could earn six points. However, if Panama results in a win against Croatia, they too could reach six points, meaning head-to-head results would then dictate who advances.
The situation could mirror Ghana’s scenario as well. Their matches against Croatia will play a critical role in determining the final standings as they look to secure a win against England and another favorable outcome in the next match.
